A storm has erupted across Kenya after a video surfaced online allegedly showing Nyeri County Governor Mutahi Kahiga making remarks perceived as mocking the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
In the viral clip, which has been widely shared on X (formerly Twitter), Governor Kahiga appears to make controversial comments during a funeral service in Nyeri County.
He is heard claiming to know “why God decided to take Raila Odinga,” insinuating that divine intervention responded to Kikuyu prayers about development projects being directed to the Nyanza region.
The statement has drawn sharp condemnation from both the public and political leaders, who described the governor’s remarks as distasteful, insensitive, and unbecoming of a national leader—especially at a time when the country is still mourning the veteran opposition chief.

Prominent political commentator JM Miano reacted strongly to the clip, accusing the governor of showing gross disrespect to a man who had dedicated his life to democracy and national unity
. “It is ironic for anyone to ridicule Raila’s death while enjoying the freedoms he fought for. Raila Odinga’s contribution to Kenya’s political liberation cannot be erased by careless talk,” Miano said.
Within ODM circles, leaders have expressed deep disappointment over Kahiga’s remarks. Some have termed the statements an attempt to water down Raila’s enduring legacy of reform, equality, and justice.
Insiders suggest the incident could rekindle political tension between the Broad-Based Government partners and the late leader’s allies, who continue to champion his vision for national inclusivity.
Online, Kenyans from all walks of life have condemned the comments, demanding an apology from the Nyeri governor.
Many have called for leaders to exercise restraint and empathy, especially when speaking about national figures whose sacrifices shaped the nation’s democratic history.
To many Kenyans, Raila Odinga was not just a politician but a symbol of resilience, sacrifice, and courage. His ideals, they say, will continue to guide Kenya’s political future—long after his passing.
