Mama Ida Odinga, widow of the late ODM Party leader and veteran opposition chief Raila Odinga, has found herself in an unexpected controversy barely a day after leaving her Opoda farm in Bondo, Siaya County, for her Karen residence in Nairobi.
In a series of photos shared online, Mama Ida was seen warmly receiving Kirinyaga County Governor Anne Waiguru, who paid her a courtesy visit at her Karen home.
The governor, accompanied by several county officials, reportedly brought gifts and goodwill messages to the grieving family. The visit was viewed by many as a gesture of solidarity and respect to the Odinga family following the recent loss of Raila Odinga.
However, as Mama Ida was hosting her visitors in Nairobi, tension was brewing back in Bondo. A group of Gor Mahia Football Club fans, who had travelled from various parts of the country to pay their respects at the late Raila Odinga’s graveside, claimed they were mistreated upon arrival at Opoda farm.
In a video that has since gone viral, one of the fans alleged that they were denied entry and were not even offered water despite the long journey. They also claimed that all houses within the compound were locked, and they were informed that Mama Ida had already left for Nairobi.

The remarks have sparked mixed reactions online. While some Kenyans criticized the alleged mistreatment of the football fans, many came to Mama Ida’s defense, urging the public to give her time and space to heal.
“Mama Ida has gone through a lot in the past month. People should allow her to rest and grieve privately,” one social media user commented. Others suggested that anyone wishing to visit her should do so later at her Karen home once the family is ready to receive guests.
The incident highlights the immense public attention and expectations surrounding the Odinga family, even in their moment of mourning. As reactions continue to pour in, many hope that Kenyans will show empathy and patience toward Mama Ida as she continues to recover from her husband’s passing.
