Chief Justice Martha Koome has issued a stern warning to Kenyans who offer bribes to court officials.
Speaking during an event in Nairobi, Koome emphasized that corruption undermines judicial integrity and delays justice delivery.
Martha Koome Condemns Bribery in Judiciary
In a video seen by this newsroom, Koome noted that despite implementing strict measures to curb corruption, Kenyans are still approaching court staff with money.
She stressed that such acts not only break the law but also tarnish the reputation of the judiciary. According to Koome, bribery enables an offence and directly contributes to the erosion of public trust.
The Chief Justice further highlighted that offering bribes in courts creates unfair advantages, where cases are decided based on influence rather than merit. She reiterated that the judiciary remains committed to transparency and accountability.
Judiciary Faces Public Pressure Over Corruption Allegations
The warning comes just months after former Law Society of Kenya President, Nelson Havi, launched a campaign against corruption in the judiciary.
Havi has repeatedly accused some judges and judicial officers of accepting bribes to influence rulings. His campaign has intensified public scrutiny on how justice is delivered across the country.
Koome, however, insists that reforms are underway and citizens must also take responsibility by rejecting corrupt practices. She urged Kenyans to report any judicial officer demanding a bribe instead of perpetuating the cycle of corruption.
