President William Ruto on Friday posed a provocative question to the nation, asking who the real “thief” is between himself and the United Democratic Alliance’s opposition rivals.
The remarks came during a fiery rally in Nakuru County, where the President accused opposition leaders of misleading the public while defending his own record in government.
“I want Kenyans to think carefully,” President Ruto said. “Between the United opposition and me, who is the thief?
Who has been honest with this country?” The statement appeared to target key opposition figures, including Raila Odinga and leaders affiliated with the United Democratic Alliance coalition.
Analysts say Ruto’s question is emblematic of a larger political strategy ahead of the 2027 general elections, where accountability, corruption and governance are likely to dominate public discourse.
By framing the debate around integrity, the President appears to be attempting to shift the narrative in his favor, while placing the opposition on the defensive.

Political commentator Dr. James Wambua described Ruto’s approach as “direct and confrontational,” noting that it is intended to resonate with voters who are frustrated by perceived mismanagement in past administrations.
“It’s a risky move,” Dr. Wambua explained. “But it signals that Ruto is confident in his achievements and willing to challenge his opponents head-on.”
Ruto’s speech also touched on his administration’s efforts to curb corruption, improve economic growth, and expand social programs, which he framed as evidence of his honesty in office.
He contrasted this with what he described as opposition attempts to undermine government projects and political stability.
Opposition leaders have not yet issued a direct response, but sources within the United Democratic Alliance indicate that they view the President’s comments as a distraction from pressing national issues, including unemployment, inflation and public debt.
Observers predict that the remarks will spark intense debate on social media and traditional news platforms, further polarizing the political climate.
Whether the President’s rhetorical question will resonate with voters remains uncertain, but it has undoubtedly reignited conversations about trust, leadership and accountability in Kenya’s political landscape.
As the 2027 elections draw nearer, such exchanges are expected to become more frequent and more pointed, shaping voter perceptions and alliances across the country.
