President William Ruto has finally broken his silence on the long-standing Migingo Island dispute between Kenya and Uganda, an issue that has for years strained relations between the two neighboring countries and left Kenyan fishermen vulnerable.
Speaking after sustained pressure from leaders in the Luo Nyanza region, including governors who demanded immediate action, the Head of State assured Kenyans that his administration will firmly defend the country’s territorial integrity and the rights of its citizens.
Migingo Island, a tiny but economically strategic outcrop in Lake Victoria, has been at the center of recurring tensions, with Kenyan fishermen reporting frequent harassment, arrests, and intimidation by Ugandan soldiers.
On several occasions, fishermen have been detained while carrying out their livelihoods, sparking public outrage and diplomatic concern. The matter has often resurfaced in national debate, especially whenever fresh incidents are reported on the lake.

In a video address that has since circulated widely, President Ruto stated unequivocally that Migingo Island is Kenyan territory and that Kenyans living and working there must be protected.
He emphasized that no foreign security forces have the right to harass Kenyan citizens, adding that his government will use “all available means” to safeguard the people of Migingo and other fishing communities along Lake Victoria.
Ruto further revealed that his administration is engaging diplomatic channels to ensure a lasting solution, while also strengthening security coordination to prevent further harassment.
He noted that Kenya values peaceful coexistence with its neighbors but will not hesitate to act decisively when the rights and safety of its people are threatened.
The President’s remarks have been welcomed by leaders from the lake region and fishermen who say they hope the statement will translate into concrete action. Many Kenyans are now keenly watching to see how the government’s next move will reshape the long-running Migingo Island saga.
