Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga has earned widespread praise after extending his support to the family of the late former Laikipia North Member of Parliament Mathew Lempurkel.
Speaking during the legislator’s burial in Kajiado County on Friday, Raila directed Governor Joseph ole Lenku to immediately offer a job opportunity to Lempurkel’s widow, further pledging to personally support the education and welfare of the children left behind.
The burial, which was attended by hundreds of mourners, including political leaders, community elders, and residents from Kajiado and Laikipia, provided a platform for Raila to honor the legacy of the late lawmaker.
Lempurkel, remembered as a fearless advocate for pastoralist communities, passed away last week after a short illness, leaving behind a young family.
In his address, Raila described Lempurkel as a committed leader who dedicated his life to fighting for land rights, equity, and development for marginalized communities.
“Mathew was not just a politician, he was a voice for his people. His sudden departure has left a huge gap, not only in his family but also among the communities he served,” Raila said.
The ODM chief went beyond paying tribute by making a direct appeal to Governor Lenku to ensure the late MP’s widow secures employment within the county government.
“Governor Lenku, as the leader of this county, I am directing you today to find a position for the widow of our brother Mathew. She must not be left to struggle. We must stand with this family,” Raila stated, drawing loud applause from the mourners.

In addition, Raila assured the gathering that he would take personal responsibility for the welfare of the children. “The children of Mathew are now our children. I will stand with them and ensure they get the education and support they need to fulfill their father’s dreams,” he said.
The gesture has since attracted positive reactions from various quarters, with many lauding Raila’s compassion and leadership.
Leaders present at the funeral praised the ODM leader for demonstrating empathy and responsibility at a time when many families of fallen politicians are often left vulnerable.
Governor Lenku, who was present at the event, pledged to honor Raila’s directive, noting that the county government would find a suitable role for the widow.
“As a government, we stand with the family during this difficult moment. We will ensure Raila’s request is fulfilled immediately,” Lenku affirmed.
Community elders also welcomed the move, describing it as a powerful statement of solidarity. “When leaders stand with families in their darkest hour, they leave a lasting legacy. Raila has shown that true leadership is about care, not just politics,” said one elder.
As the burial concluded, mourners expressed hope that Raila’s intervention would not only secure the future of Lempurkel’s family but also serve as an example of how leaders can support communities in times of grief.
For many in attendance, Raila’s actions went beyond political symbolism, offering tangible hope to a family grappling with loss while cementing his image as a leader who values human dignity.
