Rarieda Member of Parliament and senior counsel Otiende Amollo has spoken on the possibility of President William Ruto running for re-election on the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket in the 2027 General Election following the death of party leader Raila Odinga.
Speaking during an interview on Spice FM on Friday, Otiende revealed that before his passing, Raila Odinga had emphasized that the ODM party would field a candidate in 2027.
He noted that Raila’s vision was to see the party continue to play a major role in shaping Kenya’s political direction, regardless of alliances or leadership transitions.
Before his death, Baba made it very clear that ODM must have a candidate in 2027. That was his wish and his instruction to us,” Otiende said.
He, however, urged party members to avoid unnecessary speculation and internal division, especially on claims that the ODM party would back President Ruto beyond 2027.

Otiende further noted that democracy allows any Kenyan, including President Ruto, to seek a party’s ticket if they meet the necessary requirements. “If President Ruto wants to vie on the ODM ticket, nothing should stop that. It is within his democratic right. ODM remains a national party open to all Kenyans,” he stated.
His remarks come amid growing debate within ODM circles on the party’s future leadership and direction after Raila Odinga’s death. The conversation has sparked speculation about possible political realignments ahead of the 2027 polls.
Otiende emphasized unity and respect for party structures, saying ODM must remain guided by democracy and Raila’s legacy of inclusivity.
