A fresh storm is brewing within the Orange Democratic Movement after Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino publicly rejected the authority of Oburu Oginga as the party leader, deepening divisions in one of Kenya’s most influential political outfits.
The outspoken legislator did not mince his words, declaring that while Oburu commands respect within the party, that recognition stops at his status as an elder.
According to Babu, leadership of the ODM cannot be assumed or informally assigned, but must strictly follow the party’s constitution and established structures.
His remarks come at a time when the party is already grappling with internal tensions, with factions emerging over leadership direction and decision-making processes.
Babu Owino’s statement now adds a new layer to the simmering dispute, potentially setting the stage for a broader confrontation within the party ranks.
In his assertion, Babu emphasised that loyalty to the party must be anchored in democratic principles rather than personalities.

He warned against what he described as attempts to sidestep due process, arguing that such moves risk undermining the credibility and unity of the ODM.
Oburu Oginga, a veteran politician and influential figure within the party, has recently been at the centre of discussions regarding the party’s leadership direction.
His perceived elevation to a more prominent role has, however, drawn mixed reactions from members, with some welcoming his guidance while others question the legitimacy of his authority.
Babu’s sentiments echo growing unease among a section of ODM leaders who feel that internal democracy must be upheld at all costs.
They argue that the party’s strength has historically been rooted in structured leadership and collective decision-making, rather than unilateral declarations.
Political analysts say the unfolding standoff could significantly shape the party’s future, especially as it seeks to maintain cohesion ahead of upcoming political activities.
A divided front, they warn, could weaken ODM’s bargaining power and influence on the national stage.
Despite the escalating tensions, there are calls from within the party for calm and dialogue. Some leaders have urged members to resolve their differences internally and avoid public confrontations that could damage the party’s image.
As the situation develops, all eyes remain on how the ODM leadership will respond to the growing dissent. Whether the party will reconcile its internal differences or slide deeper into factional conflict could define its trajectory in the months ahead.
