Orange Democratic Party (ODM) Acting Party Leader and Siaya County Senator, Dr. Oburu Odinga, has finally broken his silence regarding growing calls from within the party to remove its Secretary General, Edwin Sifuna.
For weeks, a section of ODM members and allies have been pushing for Sifuna’s ouster, accusing him of opposing the newly proposed broad-based government — a coalition reportedly inspired by the late Raila Odinga’s earlier efforts to foster unity with President William Ruto. Critics claim Sifuna’s public statements have undermined the party’s current direction and its evolving relationship with the government.
However, Dr. Oburu Odinga has dismissed these calls as unnecessary and premature. Speaking to the press in Siaya, Oburu maintained that Sifuna has not committed any offense serious enough to justify his removal.

“Edwin Sifuna has not done anything that warrants disciplinary action or expulsion from the party. He is young, vibrant, and sometimes gets carried away — but that doesn’t mean he should be punished,” Oburu stated.
Oburu emphasized that ODM remains a democratic party that accommodates diverse opinions and youthful energy within its leadership ranks. He added that constructive debate is part of the party’s strength, not a weakness.
Meanwhile, Sifuna himself has maintained a firm stance on his political beliefs. The Nairobi Senator has previously vowed to resign from ODM if the party officially endorses President William Ruto for re-election in 2027. According to Sifuna, his loyalty to ODM remains intact for now, but beyond 2027, “things will change” depending on the party’s political direction.
The ongoing debate reflects the shifting dynamics within ODM as it redefines its identity in a post-Raila political landscape.
