As Uganda heads towards the highly anticipated 2026 general election, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has intensified his political campaigns and warned the youth against being manipulated by what he termed as “self-seeking politicians.”
The elections, scheduled for January 2026, are shaping up to be a fierce political showdown between the long-serving leader and opposition figure Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine.
President Museveni, who has ruled Uganda since 1986, is seeking to extend his leadership to four decades if re-elected.
However, political analysts say his biggest challenge remains the growing discontent among the youth, who make up the majority of Uganda’s population and have increasingly rallied behind Bobi Wine’s message of change.
Addressing a youth gathering in Kampala on Tuesday, Museveni urged young people to remain vigilant and avoid being “used as tools for chaos” by politicians aiming to destabilize the nation.

“When I was your age, I was fighting for liberation, not for destruction. Do not let anyone deceive you into violence,” he said.
Museveni also reminisced about his youthful revolutionary days in the 1970s, when he trained with FRELIMO fighters in Mozambique during their struggle against Portuguese colonial rule.
He drew parallels between his past and the current generation, encouraging the youth to channel their energy toward development and national unity rather than opposition politics.
Meanwhile, Bobi Wine has continued to attract massive crowds across the country, promising to end corruption and restore hope to what he describes as a “forgotten generation.”
His message has resonated deeply with unemployed and frustrated young Ugandans who feel left behind by the current regime.
Political observers believe the 2026 general election will be one of the most competitive in Uganda’s history, with the youth vote expected to play a decisive role.
While Museveni emphasizes stability and experience, Bobi Wine’s campaign rides on a wave of youthful optimism and calls for democratic renewal.
As the clock ticks toward January, the battle lines are drawn. For Museveni, the upcoming polls are not just another election—they represent a fight for political survival and a test of his enduring influence over Uganda’s rapidly changing political landscape.
