Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga has officially been crowned as the Luo community leader, marking a significant cultural and political moment for the community.
The coronation took place on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, during the 5th edition of the Luo Piny Festival held in Migori County, an event attended by thousands of residents and leaders from across the country.
The colourful ceremony was graced by President William Ruto, underscoring the national significance of the occasion.
Oburu Odinga, who is also the leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party, now assumes the role previously held by his younger brother, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, until his death in October 2025.
As the elder brother to Raila Odinga, Oburu is widely seen as a unifying figure within the Luo community, bringing decades of political experience and public service.

Speaking shortly after the ceremony, Oburu expressed gratitude and humility as he accepted the responsibility bestowed upon him.
In a message shared on his social media platforms, he pledged to lead with integrity, unity, and purpose, promising to prioritise the interests of the Luo people while fostering cohesion and development.
“I accept this responsibility with humility and a deep commitment to serve with integrity, unity, and purpose,” Oburu said, adding that he would work closely with elders, leaders, and the younger generation to safeguard the community’s values.
The Luo Piny Festival, now in its fifth year, celebrates Luo culture, traditions, and unity, while also providing a platform for dialogue on leadership and development. Oburu’s coronation was one of the key highlights of this year’s event.
Political analysts note that his elevation as Luo community leader could also shape regional politics, especially ahead of future national engagements, as he steps into a role long associated with influence and moral authority among the Luo people.
