President William Ruto on Thursday held an interaction with journalists from the Ukambani region shortly after concluding his tour of Kitui County.
The visit, which was part of his four-day development tour of the region, was briefly marred by heckling from a section of residents believed to be allied to the United Opposition and Wiper Party leader, Hon. Kalonzo Musyoka.
During the press briefing, a journalist posed a question that appeared to irk the Head of State, leading to a tense moment that has since sparked mixed reactions among Kenyans.
The journalist asked whether the President’s visit to Ukambani was a political mission aimed at convincing former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka to join his Kenya Kwanza administration ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Visibly displeased by the question, President Ruto shot back, insisting that his visit was not politically motivated. “I am not in Ukambani for politics. I am here for development. Let us focus on how we can transform this region that has been neglected for many years,” Ruto responded firmly.
The President went on to outline his government’s plans to improve infrastructure, water supply, and agricultural productivity in Kitui, Machakos, and Makueni counties.
He emphasized that his administration is committed to ensuring that all regions benefit equally from national development, regardless of their political affiliations.
The exchange between Ruto and the journalist quickly went viral on social media, with many Kenyans debating whether the question was fair or provocative. Some argued that the President overreacted, while others defended him, saying he was right to redirect the focus to development issues.
The Ukambani tour continues, with the President expected to hold further engagements with grassroots leaders from the region.
