Heavy rains pounding the capital over the past few days have left a trail of destruction across several neighbourhoods, forcing families from their homes and disrupting normal life. Roads turned into rivers overnight, vehicles stalled in flooded streets and emergency teams struggled to reach affected areas as the downpour intensified.
Residents in low-lying sections of the city woke up to water surging into houses, sweeping away property and leaving many stranded.
Makeshift drainage systems were overwhelmed as the rain continued, raising concerns about safety and access to essential services.
Local authorities and rescue teams were deployed across different parts of the city to help evacuate families trapped by the rising water levels.
Volunteers and security officers worked through the night to assist residents, especially in informal settlements where flooding tends to hit hardest.
Amid the growing crisis, the government moved to coordinate a nationwide emergency response.
President William Ruto ordered a multi agency intervention to support affected residents in Nairobi following reports of fatalities linked to the floods.
The directive brought together several government institutions, including disaster management teams, the military, police and county officials, to speed up rescue operations and restore normalcy in affected areas.
Authorities said the coordinated response would focus on evacuations, clearing blocked drainage systems and assisting displaced families.
At the same time, the government announced the immediate release of relief food and other emergency supplies to help households affected by the flooding.
The supplies are expected to reach families who lost property or were forced to flee their homes as water levels continued to rise in some parts of the city.
Officials also warned residents living near rivers and flood prone zones to remain vigilant as the rains are expected to continue in the coming days.

Emergency teams have been placed on standby to respond quickly to any additional incidents.
County authorities have urged city residents to avoid driving through flooded roads and to report blocked drainage channels that could worsen the situation.
They also appealed for cooperation from the public to ensure rescue teams can access affected areas without obstruction.
Humanitarian agencies have begun mobilising support for those displaced by the floods, with temporary shelters being set up for families who cannot immediately return to their homes.
As rescue and recovery efforts continue, the government has emphasised the need for long term measures to address urban flooding.
Experts say improved drainage infrastructure, proper waste management and stricter planning regulations will be critical in preventing similar disasters in the future.
For now, the focus remains on saving lives, providing relief to affected families and restoring order in a city struggling to cope with the impact of the intense rains.
