Just weeks after the emotional burial of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party leader Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga at his Opoda Farm in Bondo, Siaya County, Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has once again found herself at the center of a political storm.
During the funeral, Wanga made headlines after she called for the banning of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, accusing him of sending Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga to “celebrate Raila Odinga’s death.”
Her remarks drew widespread condemnation from across the political divide, with many accusing her of insensitivity and divisive politics during a time of mourning.
In response to the uproar, the Odinga family, through Raila Odinga Jr., released a statement urging calm and emphasizing inclusivity. The family stated that “all Kenyans, regardless of political affiliation, are welcome to visit our father’s grave and pay their respects.”
However, barely two weeks after the dust settled, Governor Wanga is once again courting controversy.

A video circulating online shows her addressing residents of Magarini Constituency, where she warned locals against voting for candidates who are not in good terms with their area governor. According to Wanga, development projects only flow smoothly when leaders are politically aligned.
Her statement has sparked mixed reactions online, with a section of Kenyans accusing her of promoting political favoritism and undermining democracy. Critics argue that her remarks suggest that citizens could be denied development based on their political choices — a notion many view as undemocratic and divisive.
Among those who have publicly criticized Wanga is Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai, who dismissed her comments as “misguided and unconstitutional.” Alai stated that every Kenyan, regardless of political leaning, deserves equal access to development. “Development is a right, not a political favor,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Political analysts have warned that such statements from high-ranking county officials could alienate voters and strain relations within the ODM party, especially at a time when the opposition is seeking to consolidate unity ahead of future elections.
As pressure mounts, Wanga has yet to issue a formal response to the growing backlash, but observers say her repeated controversies could dent her once-strong political image within Nyanza and beyond.
