Gachagua’s Tactical Move On By- Elections That Has Left the UDA Team Startled

Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader, His Excellency Rigathi Gachagua, has left the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) camp startled after making a strategic political move in Kajiado County.

The former Deputy President, who now spearheads the fast-rising DCP, on Monday unveiled Simon Senare as the party’s official candidate for the upcoming Purko Ward by-election.

The announcement, which took place in Purko Ward, was marked by unity and consensus-building a stark contrast to the divisions many had anticipated. According to Gachagua, the selection of Senare followed a careful consultation process that brought together two potential aspirants who had initially expressed interest in the DCP ticket.

“I asked the elders of Kajiado to sit the two candidates down and guide them in coming up with one strong candidate who represents the will of the people,” Gachagua said during the unveiling. “What we are witnessing today is a testament to the maturity and discipline of DCP as a party. Instead of divisions, we have unity.”

Many within UDA and other rival formations had expected the process to trigger a fallout, with the possibility of one candidate walking out after being sidelined.

However, Gachagua’s approach of mediation and teamwork yielded consensus, ensuring that the two initial contenders agreed to rally behind Senare as a single flagbearer.

This tactical move is being interpreted by political analysts as a sign of Gachagua’s growing influence in regions traditionally dominated by other parties.

By consolidating support in Purko Ward, DCP has not only avoided internal wrangles but also sent a strong signal that it is preparing aggressively for the 2027 General Election.

Gachagua urged DCP leaders and supporters in Kajiado to put their full weight behind Senare’s candidature, emphasizing that the by-election is only the beginning of the party’s bigger ambitions.

“Kajiado is a strategic county for us. We are not just focusing on Purko Ward. Come 2027, we are targeting the gubernatorial seat, the woman representative position, and multiple parliamentary seats. That is why discipline and unity are key in this journey,” he declared.

The unveiling was welcomed warmly by local residents, with elders praising Gachagua for involving them in the decision-making process. “This is how politics should be done — with respect for tradition, consultation, and unity,” one elder remarked.

Meanwhile, UDA officials in Kajiado were caught off guard by the developments. Insiders say the ruling party had anticipated a split within DCP, which they had hoped to capitalize on. Instead, DCP’s ability to present a united front is now seen as a potential challenge to UDA’s dominance in the Maasai heartland.

As campaigns for the Purko Ward by-election intensify, Gachagua’s DCP will be looking to test its political machinery on the ground while building momentum for its 2027 ambitions. With Senare’s unveiling, the party has taken a significant step in projecting itself as a serious contender in Kajiado County and beyond.
