Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has broken his silence after days of criticism from Kenyans questioning his conspicuous absence at both the funeral ceremony and memorial service of the late former Prime Minister and ODM party leader, Hon. Raila Odinga.
The events, held in Nairobi and later at Opoda Farm in Bondo, Siaya County, drew national attention and attracted leaders from across the political divide except Gachagua.
Kenyans on social media had expressed disappointment, with many arguing that Gachagua’s absence was disrespectful given Raila Odinga’s stature in national politics. Others speculated that political tensions and emerging alliances might have contributed to his decision to stay away.
However, Gachagua has now moved to set the record straight. Speaking during an interview with an Embu-based media house, he clarified that his absence was based on an understanding reached with Raila Odinga’s family regarding the timing of his visit.

According to Gachagua, the family advised that he should visit Opoda Farm after the November 27 by-election, a period they believed would allow for a more peaceful and less politicized visit. He emphasized that he remains committed to paying his respects and strengthening ties with the Luo community.
Here is Gachagua’s full statement:
“I will be visiting Opoda Farm with my big delegation to pay tribute to the late Hon. Raila Odinga in the first week of December. I have been advised by elders that since we have reached out to all other communities, we should reach out to the Luo community and work together. I have talked to Raila’s daughter and Raila’s family and we have agreed that I will visit Bondo after the Nov 27 by-election.” — Rigathi Gachagua
Gachagua’s announcement appears aimed at calming public reactions and reinforcing his efforts to rebuild political bridges across the country. His planned December visit is now expected to serve as a symbolic gesture of unity and reconciliation.
