Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has sparked widespread reactions online after publicly asking Kenyans to forgive him for what he termed as the biggest mistake of his political career.
Speaking during an intense interview with KTN News at his Karen home, Gachagua admitted that his decision to support President William Ruto in the 2022 General Election was misguided.
Responding to a question on why he was silent while in government but now openly criticizes the President, Gachagua said his silence was due to loyalty and respect for the office he served.
However, he confessed that he now feels compelled to speak out after realizing that the promises made to Kenyans—especially to the Mount Kenya region—have not been fulfilled.

“The only mistake I made, and I ask Kenyans to forgive me, was presenting William Ruto to them thinking he would transform their lives. I was wrong, and I am ready to correct that mistake in 2027,” Gachagua stated during the interview.
His statement immediately went viral on social media, with many Kenyans expressing mixed reactions. Some hailed his honesty and courage to admit failure, while others accused him of shifting blame after falling out with the Head of State.
Gachagua has in recent months become one of the fiercest critics of President Ruto’s administration, accusing it of neglecting the Mount Kenya region and imposing punitive taxes on citizens.
His latest remarks appear to set the stage for a major political showdown ahead of the 2027 General Election, where he has vowed to rally Kenyans to “correct the 2022 mistake.”
