Former Citizen TV and NTV journalist Kimani Mbugua has passed away, sending shockwaves across Kenya’s media fraternity.
According to reports, Kimani died on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, though the exact cause of his death remains unclear at the time of publication.
Sources close to the family confirmed that he had been battling mental health challenges, which had seen him in and out of rehabilitation centres in recent years.
The 29-year-old media personality had openly shared his struggles with bipolar disorder, sparking nationwide conversations about mental health awareness, particularly among young professionals in the media industry.

Kimani’s journey in journalism began at just 19 years old, when he joined the Nation Media Group (NMG) as a presenter at Nation FM and NTV. His youthful energy, charisma, and passion for storytelling quickly made him a standout figure in broadcast journalism. He later moved to Royal Media Services, where he joined Citizen TV as a presenter, earning admiration for his eloquence and engaging style.
Many Kenyans remember him for his insightful reporting and vibrant on-screen presence. Following news of his death, tributes poured in from journalists, fans, and media houses alike, celebrating his talent and lamenting his untimely demise.
“Kimani was one of the most promising young journalists of our generation. His passing is a great loss to the media industry,” one of his former colleagues said.
