
Kenyans are mourning after the brutal murder of Professor Thomas Tony Onyango Mboya in Kakrigu, Rusinga Island, Suba.
The respected Technical University of Kenya scholar was attacked by a panga-wielding assailant, reportedly over a land dispute.
Police in Homa Bay County confirmed the incident and have launched investigations to bring Prof. Mboya’s killer to justice.
Until his death, Professor Mboya was Director of the School of Mathematics and Statistics at the Technical University of Kenya.
Born in 1970, Prof. Thomas Mboya began his education at Kokuro Secondary School, completing his Kenya Certificate of Education in 1987.
He later joined Homa Bay High School for his Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education (KACE), successfully finishing in 1989.
In 1993, he graduated from Egerton University with a Bachelor of Education (Science), setting the foundation for a stellar career.
Prof. Mboya joined the Teachers Service Commission in 1994 before pursuing a Master of Science degree in Mathematics at the University of Nairobi.

He completed his master’s in 1999, returning to teach before joining the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) as a lecturer in 2002.
In 2005, he advanced his studies abroad at the University of Leeds, earning a PhD in Inverse and Ill-posed Problems in 2008.
The renowned Kenyan mathematician returned to CUEA in 2009, serving until 2012 before joining the Technical University of Kenya (TUK).
At TUK, he became Senior Lecturer and Chair of Statistics and Computational Mathematics before leading Industrial and Engineering Mathematics in 2013.
Between 2013 and 2016, Prof. Mboya’s leadership strengthened TUK’s mathematics programs, cementing his reputation as a leading Kenyan scholar.
At the time of his death, he was Associate Professor and Director of the School of Mathematics and Statistics at TUK.
Colleagues and students have described Prof. Thomas Mboya as a brilliant mathematician, dedicated mentor, and selfless academic leader in Kenya.
Residents of Rusinga Island have condemned the killing and urged authorities to resolve land disputes fueling violence in Suba.
His tragic death has robbed Kenya’s academic community of a respected leader whose legacy will inspire future generations of scholars.
