Ugandan opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has once again shaken the political landscape as the country edges closer to the January 2026 general election.
Widely regarded as the biggest threat to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s decades-long rule, the musician-turned-politician continues to galvanize massive public support despite persistent obstacles placed in his path.
As the campaign season gains momentum, Bobi Wine’s rallies have been drawing huge crowds across the country, a development that has reportedly unsettled the ruling establishment.
In recent months, authorities blocked him from addressing gatherings in several major towns, citing security concerns, a move that sparked widespread criticism from human rights activists and ordinary Ugandans alike.
However, events took a dramatic turn on December 20, 2025, when Bobi Wine launched his campaign activities in Ngora town.
In what many supporters described as a political masterstroke, the rally was joined by Ampe Lawrence, a former prisons officer who was allegedly dismissed from service after criticizing the Museveni administration.

His appearance at the event quickly went viral, catching the government and its supporters off guard.
In a statement shared after the rally, Bobi Wine condemned what he termed as double standards within the state.
He pointed out that while officers who speak against injustice are punished, others seen openly engaging in partisan politics while in uniform face no consequences. According to Bobi Wine, this reflects a deeper problem of inequality and selective application of the law.
“Our campaigns have kicked off in Ngora town where we’ve been joined by Ampe Lawrence, a former prisons officer who has been sacked for speaking out against injustice,” Bobi Wine said.
He added that the people of Ngora had warmly embraced his message, calling for a new Uganda founded on equality, dignity, and justice for all citizens.
The rally has since fueled excitement among opposition supporters, with many celebrating what they view as a bold challenge to the status quo.
