The united opposition alliance appears to be facing fresh turmoil as discussions on who should lead the coalition into the 2027 general election continue to generate divisions and tension.
The contest for the opposition’s presidential flag bearer has reportedly narrowed down to four major figures — DCP party leader Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper party leader Hon. Kalonzo Musyoka, Jubilee party candidate Dr. Fred Matiang’i, and Democratic Party (DP) leader Hon. Justin Muturi. Notably absent from the current battle is NARC Kenya leader Martha Karua, who has maintained a low profile amid the ongoing talks.
However, even as negotiations continue, a dramatic twist has emerged within Eugene Wamalwa’s Democratic Action Party (DAP–Kenya). A shocking video circulating online shows a faction within the party claiming to have initiated a coup d’état against Wamalwa and his deputy, Governor George Natembeya.
In the viral footage seen by Us, the group accuses Wamalwa and Natembeya of sidelining party members and allegedly mismanaging the coalition’s direction. The faction has issued a seven-day ultimatum for the two leaders to vacate office, threatening to take over the party headquarters by force if their demands are not met.

The self-proclaimed new DAP leadership has also revealed intentions to open dialogue with President William Ruto and Oburu Odinga, Raila Odinga’s elder brother, in an effort to realign politically ahead of the 2027 elections. They argue that forming a broader and more “strategic” coalition would give the opposition a better chance against the ruling Kenya Kwanza Alliance.
Political analysts now say that the unfolding DAP crisis could complicate unity efforts within the opposition. Eugene Wamalwa, who has been a vocal critic of the government, risks losing control of his party at a critical moment when coalition negotiations are at their peak.
So far, Wamalwa has not publicly responded to the coup claims, but sources close to him describe the move as a “well-orchestrated betrayal” backed by external forces keen to destabilize the opposition from within.
As the deadline issued by the rebel group draws closer, all eyes remain on the embattled DAP leader and the wider opposition team. Whether they can restore unity and settle on a single presidential candidate in time for 2027 remains to be seen.
