Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has suffered a significant political setback following fresh developments from Nyamira County.
The latest move by a key regional leader has cast doubt on the strength and unity of the opposition he has been working to consolidate ahead of future political contests.
Just weeks ago, Matiang’i, who serves as Jubilee Party’s Deputy Party Leader, took to the campaign trail in both Nyamira and Kisii counties.
The energetic politician openly campaigned for opposition candidates during recent by-elections, urging voters to rally behind the United Opposition as a way of checking the Kenya Kwanza administration.
His presence on the ground was seen as a renewed attempt to revive opposition politics in Gusii region and position himself as a national figure ahead of 2027.

However, the political landscape has shifted abruptly. According to information reaching us, Nyamira County Governor His Excellency Amos Nyaribo has officially dumped the opposition and joined the broad-based government.
In a move that surprised many of Matiang’i’s supporters, Governor Nyaribo crossed over together with his party, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), and several party officials.
Nyaribo was received by Kisii County Governor Simba Arati at his Motonto home in a meeting that symbolized the formal entry into the broad-based government arrangement.
The Nyamira governor was accompanied by UPA National Chairman Nyambega Gisesa, further cementing the party’s new political direction.
This development is being interpreted as a major blow to Matiang’i’s efforts to build a strong and united opposition front.
Analysts argue that the defection weakens opposition influence in Nyamira County and sends a worrying signal to leaders who recently aligned with Matiang’i’s political push.
