NAIROBI, Kenya — Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has finally broken his silence, clearing the air on his noticeable absence from the recent launch of the Linda Mwananchi movement headquarters organized by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.
The high-profile opposition gathering hit national headlines after Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka was loudly heckled by a section of the crowd while addressing attendees. Kalonzo had taken issue with premature declarations naming Sifuna as the united opposition’s presidential flagbearer.
As one of the prominent figures in the united opposition actively seeking to fly the coalition’s presidential ticket, Matiang’i’s absence from the heavily attended event raised eyebrows across the political spectrum. Speculation immediately mounted over potential internal rifts within the opposition ranks.
However, addressing the public in a recent video, Dr. Matiang’i set the record straight, dismissing rumors of bad blood. He revealed that his absence was purely procedural, clarifying that he simply did not receive an invitation to the launch from Senator Sifuna or the event’s organizing team.
“I was not invited by Honorable Edwin Sifuna to the event, and that is the sole reason why I did not attend,” Matiang’i stated.
Matiang’i’s clarification comes at a delicate moment for the opposition, as key leaders scramble to project unity ahead of formal consultations to agree on a joint candidate.
Despite the optics of the event and the friction surrounding Kalonzo’s speech, Matiang’i reassured his supporters that his commitment to the broader opposition agenda remains firm as the race for the coalition’s presidential flagbearer intensifies.
