DCI Forced To Apologize To Kenyan After Making A Blunder

DCI Apologizes for Wrongfully Including Man in Anti-Finance Bill Protest ListThe Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has issued an apology after mistakenly including Dennis Basweti in its list of individuals wanted for storming Parliament during recent anti-Finance Bill protests.

The notice was published in local newspapers and on social media on Wednesday.

Basweti, who was surprised to find his name on the list, promptly surrendered himself to the police.

He clarified that the photograph circulating was taken during an earlier visit to the National Assembly on June 10, 2024. During this visit, he met South Mugirango MP Sylvanus Osoro, not during the protests.

Following Basweti’s statement, the DCI launched an investigation and confirmed his account. They subsequently exonerated him from any involvement in the protests.”

The DCI has since confirmed that Dennis Basweti’s narrative is true, and has reached out to him with an apology, further commending him for believing in the DCI’s pledge to conduct investigations thoroughly and fairly,” the Directorate stated.

MP Osoro supported Basweti’s claim, identifying him as a pastor who had indeed visited him in Parliament more than a week before the protests.

Osoro explained that Basweti took photos and videos during this visit, which may have been mistaken for footage from the day of the protests.”

Osoro maintained that this misunderstanding could have led to the police mistaking the video for recent footage taken during protests, which in turn led to Basweti being among the wanted individuals,” a statement from the Majority Whip’s office read.

This incident has highlighted the importance of thorough verification before publishing such lists, especially in politically charged situations.

The DCI’s apology and quick action to rectify the mistake have been positively received, underscoring the Directorate’s commitment to fairness and accuracy in their investigations.
