Chief Justice Martha Koome Reveals Why She Stopped Watching News: Slams Ruto’s Policy
Chief Justice Martha Koome revealed her reasons for no longer watching the news. She cited the distress it causes her. This is due to the ongoing inequalities in the education system under President William Ruto’s administration.
During the meeting, the Chief Justice expressed her deep concern. She is worried about the growing disparity in access to quality education in Kenya. She claims it has become a privilege for the wealthy.
“It is heartbreaking to turn on the television. You see Kenyans lamenting about the state of our education system,” she said. “Education, which should be a great equalizer, is now only accessible to a select few who can afford it.”

Chief Justice Koome highlighted the issue of the new education model’s band system. This system categorizes students based on their socioeconomic status.
According to her, many underprivileged children are being unfairly placed in Band Five. This tier is typically assigned to families with financial difficulties.

However, she alleged that some children from wealthy families are being placed in Band One. This band is intended for the most economically disadvantaged students.
“This is a clear violation of the principles of equality and fairness,” Koome remarked. “Our children are being marginalized because of their parents’ financial standing. Meanwhile, the wealthy exploit a system designed to support the poor.”
The Chief Justice concluded by urging the government to reconsider its education policies, particularly the band system.
She called for the prioritization of free and equitable education for all Kenyan children. This should be regardless of their socioeconomic background. She emphasized that the future of the nation depends on it.
“We must ensure that every child has an equal opportunity to succeed,” she asserted.
