Natembeya Seeks Divine Intervention Amid Standoff Over Masinde Muliro Market
KITALE, Kenya — Trans Nzoia County Governor George Natembeya has pulled an unexpected move amid an escalating political row with the national government over the ownership of the Masinde Muliro Ultra-Modern Market in Kitale.
Rather than physically confronting security officers deployed to guard the market, Natembeya hosted members of the clergy at his Kitale executive office to seek divine intervention for himself, local leaders, and the nation.
The dispute stems from a clash between the county chief and the state over who should claim credit for the multi-million shilling facility.
Following the recent official opening of the market by President William Ruto, Natembeya publicly insisted that the project was funded and executed by the County Government of Trans Nzoia alongside development partners.
He further vowed to remove a commemorative plaque bearing the President’s name from the market walls and replace it with county branding.

In response to the governor’s threats, security was stepped up around the market premises, with heavily armed police officers deployed to guard the structure and prevent potential chaos.
Anticipating an imminent physical showdown at the market, observers were surprised when Governor Natembeya chose a spiritual approach instead.
During the prayer session with the local pastors, Natembeya emphasized the need for peace, political tolerance, and peaceful coexistence between county administration and the national government.
Remarkably, the governor asked the spiritual leaders to extend their prayers to President William Ruto, praying for wisdom and unity as both levels of government navigate leadership responsibilities.
Natembeya’s unexpected shift from a fiery political posture to a spiritual call for reconciliation has temporarily defused tensions in Kitale, giving residents and local traders hope for a peaceful resolution to the high-stakes jurisdiction battle.
