Tensions flared at the Friends Church in Lang’ata during the requiem mass for veteran
diplomat Burudi Nabwera when Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and National
Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula walked out as Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna took
the podium.

The high-profile service brought together key political figures against the backdrop
of an increasingly intense national debate. Both Wetang’ula and Mudavadi had already
delivered their tributes to the late statesman before Sifuna was invited to address
the mourners.

As the senator stood to speak, video footage captured the two senior leaders leaving
their seats and exiting the venue, sparking widespread discussion online.

Both leaders later moved to clarify their abrupt departure, attributing it to prior
scheduling conflicts and official State commitments rather than political friction.

Wetang’ula explained that he needed to catch an afternoon engagement scheduled ahead
of the weekend, while Mudavadi maintained he had to leave to attend to urgent government
duties.

The walkout followed a sequence of speeches that had already drawn attention due
to protocol arrangements, which placed the senior government officials ahead of
the Nairobi lawmaker.

The incident underscored underlying political realignments as leaders navigate heightened
friction ahead of upcoming electoral contests.

Nabwera, who passed away recently, was celebrated during the service as a pioneering
statesman, Kenya’s first ambassador to the United States, and the inaugural Permanent
Representative to the United Nations, alongside his extensive service as a Cabinet
minister and legislator.
