# Video: Catholic Priest Dies After Giant Cross Falls on Him During Church Service

A Catholic priest has died after a massive wooden cross fell on him while he was
conducting Mass in Ecuador, leaving worshippers horrified by the tragic incident
captured on a livestream.

The priest, identified as Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, was leading
a religious service at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Guayaquil on Saturday,
October 17, 2026, when the unexpected accident occurred.

According to reports, the large crucifix mounted behind the altar suddenly detached
from the wall and fell directly onto the priest as he carried out his religious
duties.

Footage circulating on social media shows the shocking moment the cross came crashing
down on Father Sánchez Molinari. The impact left him motionless as members of the
congregation reacted with disbelief and rushed to assist him.

The incident reportedly occurred about 27 minutes into the livestream, allowing
viewers online to witness the tragic turn of events.

Despite the immediate response from those present, the priest died following the
incident, bringing an abrupt and heartbreaking end to the church service.

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Guayaquil later confirmed his death, expressing
sorrow over the loss and conveying condolences to his family, religious community,
friends and members of the Catholic faithful.

Father Sánchez Molinari served as the parish priest at the church and was a member
of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, widely known as the Redemptorists.

His death has sparked an outpouring of sympathy online, with many people expressing
sadness over the circumstances surrounding his passing.

The tragedy has particularly shocked viewers because it occurred during an ordinary
moment of prayer and worship, a setting where congregants would normally expect
to feel safe.

However, the exact circumstances that caused the heavy cross to fall remain unclear.
No confirmed explanation has been provided establishing whether the structure’s
mounting had weakened or whether another factor contributed to the accident.

The incident has also drawn attention to the importance of properly securing heavy
fixtures inside churches and other public buildings.

For the Catholic community in Guayaquil, the death of Father Sánchez Molinari represents
a painful loss, as parishioners mourn a priest whose final moments unfolded during
the service he was leading.
