# Video: Gladys Wanga Finally Speaks on Giving Direct Nominations in ODM

Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has finally addressed the debate surrounding direct
nominations in the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), declaring that aspirants must
compete for political seats through the party’s nomination process.

Speaking at Ndhiwa in Homa Bay County, Wanga made it clear that she would not endorse
any individual for a political position ahead of the party primaries.

The governor’s remarks come at a critical moment for ODM, which is facing uncertainty
following the death of its longtime leader, Raila Odinga, on October 15, 2025.

Raila’s passing has raised questions about the party’s leadership, unity and political
direction ahead of the next general election.

The once formidable political outfit is also experiencing internal divisions, with
rival camps emerging around Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Oburu Odinga.

These developments have sparked debate among supporters over who will control the
party and how candidates will be selected for upcoming elections.

Wanga’s position on nominations could therefore prove significant, particularly
as aspirants begin positioning themselves for various elective seats across the
country.

By insisting on competitive nominations, the governor has signalled that political
hopefuls should not assume they will automatically receive party tickets through
endorsements from influential leaders.

Her remarks may also reassure aspirants who fear that powerful individuals could
influence the nomination process in favour of preferred candidates.

However, the effectiveness of this position will depend on how ODM conducts its
primaries and whether the process is considered free, fair and transparent by participating
candidates.

The nomination question is likely to remain a major issue as the party navigates
its post-Raila transition and attempts to maintain its political influence.

With different factions seeking to shape ODM’s future, Wanga’s latest declaration
adds another important dimension to the unfolding debate over leadership and candidate
selection.

Her message in Ndhiwa was clear: no aspirant should expect an automatic ticket,
and those seeking elective positions must be prepared to face the party’s nomination
process.
