Quiet consultations, technical assessments and renewed diplomatic engagements have been taking place as Nairobi and Washington respond to evolving security dynamics in the Horn of Africa.

While officials have remained measured in their public remarks, the developments signal a deeper alignment on regional defence priorities.

Against this backdrop, the United States is set to expand the runway at Kenya’s Manda Bay airbase in Lamu County, a move both governments say will significantly strengthen counter terrorism operations and enhance regional stability.

The project comes amid growing concerns over transnational threats, including militant activity linked to extremist groups operating across borders in East Africa.

Manda Bay has long served as a strategic facility for joint Kenya–US military operations, particularly in monitoring and responding to threats emanating from Somalia and the wider Indian Ocean region.

Expanding the runway will allow the base to accommodate larger aircraft and improve logistical flexibility, enabling quicker deployment of personnel, equipment, and humanitarian support when needed.

Kenyan defence officials say the upgrade will bolster the Kenya Defence Forces’ operational capacity while reinforcing intelligence-sharing and joint training initiatives with US forces.

They argue that enhanced infrastructure at the base will improve surveillance coverage and response times, key elements in countering insurgent networks that exploit porous borders and remote terrain.

The US government has described the project as part of its long-term security partnership with Kenya, emphasizing that the expansion is defensive in nature and aimed at promoting stability rather than projecting force.

American officials note that Kenya remains a critical ally in efforts to combat terrorism and secure major shipping lanes along the East African coast.

Local leaders in Lamu County have offered cautious reactions, welcoming the potential economic benefits associated with construction and increased activity at the base, while urging transparency and sensitivity to community concerns.

Some residents have previously raised questions about land use, environmental impact, and local security, issues authorities say will be addressed through consultations.

As regional security challenges continue to evolve, both Nairobi and Washington maintain that cooperation at Manda Bay reflects a shared commitment to safeguarding peace, supporting regional partners, and preventing extremist groups from gaining a foothold in East Africa.
