Oburu Odinga Resigns as Chair of Senate Energy CommitteeNAIROBI, Kenya — Siaya Senator and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Oburu Oginga Odinga has stepped down as the Chairperson of the Senate Energy Committee, stepping away from one of the house’s most influential legislative panels.
Senator Oburu announced his unexpected resignation on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, during a committee meeting in Parliament.
Addressing fellow committee members, the veteran politician stated that his decision was driven by “circumstances beyond my control,” though he refrained from providing specific details or elaboration regarding the precise reasons behind his sudden exit.
Oburu had led the powerful Senate Energy Committee since February 20, 2025, when he took over from Nyeri Senator Wamatinga Wahome following an 18-month tenure.
His resignation marks the latest major political shift within the Senate leadership. Notably, the decision comes nearly two months after Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna was dropped from the same committee during a broader reshuffle of standing committees announced on June 17, 2026.

Following Senator Oburu’s announcement, the committee moved swiftly to fill the leadership void.
Elgeyo Marakwet Senator William Kisang, who previously served as the committee’s vice-chairperson, was elected as the new Chairman of the Senate Energy Committee.
As one of the key standing committees in the Senate, the Energy Committee plays a vital role in overseeing Kenya’s energy sector policies, regulations, and multi-billion-shilling infrastructure projects.
Oburu’s exit is expected to trigger further discussion on political realignments within Parliament and the leadership dynamic within the ODM party moving forward.
