**Babu Owino Claims Ruto Offered Him Education CS Role During 2024 Protests**

**NAIROBI, Kenya** — Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has sparked wide
online discussion after revealing that President William Ruto offered him the position
of Cabinet Secretary for Education during the height of the Gen Z anti-government
protests in 2024.

Speaking during an interview on _Thee Alfa House_ YouTube channel, the lawmaker 
claimed he turned down the ministerial docket due to his strong political beliefs
and commitment to principles over power.

According to Owino, the offer came as the Kenya Kwanza administration faced immense
pressure from nationwide demonstrations against the Finance Bill 2024. The wave 
of public discontent eventually led President Ruto to dismiss his entire Cabinet
on July 11, 2024, before initiating talks for a broad-based government.

The outspoken legislator noted that he stood firm in his refusal to join the executive
arrangement, even when the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and other ODM
party colleagues agreed to work with the administration. Owino highlighted that 
he was the sole high-profile ODM member who openly resisted joining the government,
maintaining that his political integrity took precedence.

“Babu was approached during the Gen Z protests; Babu was supposed to be given the
minister for Education,” Owino said during the interview, stressing that holding
a government post was not worth compromising his core values.

In addition to addressing the Cabinet offer, Owino defended his decision to launch
_The Mwananchi Party_, explaining that it aims to encourage young leaders to run
for elective seats, including parliamentary and gubernatorial positions. Citing 
past political alliances such as NARC, Jubilee, NASA, and Azimio, he pointed out
that political parties can form coalitions while retaining their independent identities.
