Kitutu Chache South MP claims former Deputy President is trying to control the opposition ahead of 2027
Kitutu Chache South MP Anthony Kibagendi has accused former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of demanding a 50 per cent share of government during talks with leaders of the Linda Mwananchi movement.
In a strongly worded statement posted on social media on Monday, November 2, 2026, Kibagendi claimed the demand was made at Gachagua’s Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri County, where Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and other opposition figures were present. “Who does he think he is?” the MP asked.
Kibagendi questioned whether Gachagua wanted to control a future government by installing leaders answerable to him.
He accused the former Deputy President of sidelining other opposition figures, among them Fred Matiang’i, Peter Munya, Kawira Mwangaza and Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, and of deciding which leaders should campaign in which regions.
The legislator also criticised Gachagua’s recent Inooro FM interview, in which he allegedly suggested forming a government with Sifuna and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka without involving other leaders.
Kibagendi recounted a 2023 meeting in which Gachagua, then Deputy President, hosted Gusii MPs. He alleged Gachagua told him to seek development support from the late Raila Odinga rather than expect it from government. Kibagendi said he walked out, an incident he says pushed him to oppose the Kenya Kwanza administration.
He defended Linda Mwananchi as a movement meant to give the opposition a national outlook, not to advance individual ambitions. “There must be unity in the opposition, there has to be respect for everyone,” he said, adding that he was not insisting that Matiang’i, Sifuna or Kalonzo be the flag bearer.
Kibagendi warned that infighting could weaken efforts to unseat President William Ruto in 2027. The remarks add to growing tension over leadership and power-sharing within the opposition.
