Kalonzo Reveals Why Uhuru Kenyatta Missed Raila Odinga’s Memorial
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has revealed why former President Uhuru Kenyatta reportedly missed the first anniversary commemoration of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in Bondo, Siaya County.
Kalonzo claimed Uhuru’s advance team discovered that the memorial had been infiltrated by individuals allegedly acting in bad faith, raising concerns about security at the event.
Speaking during his State of the Nation Address on Monday, October 19, 2026, the opposition leader condemned the violence witnessed at Migwena Cultural Grounds, saying it undermined the unity and respect intended for Raila’s family.
The ceremony descended into chaos after groups of youths clashed, with some reportedly throwing stones towards the VIP tent. The confrontation forced leaders to seek cover as security officers intervened to restore order.
Police arrested five suspects in connection with the incident. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) also reported recovering a machete, sword and knife during the arrests.
However, Kalonzo urged investigators to look beyond those arrested at the scene and pursue individuals suspected of financing and organising the violence.

“Follow the money, follow the vehicles — arrest the financiers, not just the young men wielding the weapons,” Kalonzo said, calling on the Inspector General of Police and the DCI to conduct thorough investigations.
He warned young people against accepting money to participate in political violence, arguing that those recruiting them would abandon them when they faced prosecution.
The Wiper leader encouraged the youth to exercise their constitutional rights through peaceful demonstrations, political participation and voter registration.
Kalonzo also recalled remarks by Raila’s daughter, Winnie Odinga, that her late father believed everyone deserved the freedom to express their opinions.
He criticised attempts to intimidate people over their political positions, insisting that disagreements should not result in violence.
The former vice president further reaffirmed his commitment to Raila’s democratic struggle, saying the journey towards a fairer Kenya remained unfinished.
He urged Kenyans to continue pursuing a country where citizens enjoy equal rights, opportunities and freedom regardless of their political affiliations.
