Video: Moses Wetang’ula and Farouk Kibet Caught Up in Chaos as Youth Chant Sifuna in Bungoma
A government-sponsored empowerment event in Matulo, Webuye West, Bungoma County, descended into chaos on Sunday, October 18, 2026, after sections of the crowd broke into loud chants of “Sifuna! Sifuna!” while National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and other Kenya Kwanza leaders were present.
The incident, captured in a video circulating online, disrupted the gathering and turned attention towards Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, whose name was repeatedly chanted by attendees.
Wetang’ula led the delegation at the event alongside Farouk Kibet, Bungoma Senator Wafula Wakoli and other leaders allied to the Kenya Kwanza administration.
However, the proceedings took an unexpected turn when sections of the crowd began chanting Sifuna’s name, transforming the empowerment function into a politically charged gathering.
Youths Chant Sifuna as Event Turns Chaotic
According to reports from the event, some youths rejected items being distributed and demanded cash payments of at least KSh 500 each.

The situation reportedly escalated as the chants grew louder, with the Webuye–Bungoma highway also being blocked during the commotion.
Senator Wakoli was reportedly forced to move to safety as tensions intensified. The circumstances surrounding the reported movements of Wetang’ula and Farouk Kibet were not independently established from the available account.
The disruption overshadowed the intended purpose of the empowerment programme, which was organised to engage residents and provide support to members of the community.
Even after the initial commotion, chants of “Sifuna! Sifuna!” reportedly continued around Matulo, drawing further attention to the political message being expressed by sections of the crowd.
Sifuna’s Name Dominates Bungoma Gathering
The incident comes amid heightened political activity in Kenya as leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Sifuna has remained a prominent political figure, and the chants at Matulo placed his name at the centre of an event attended by senior government-aligned leaders.
However, the crowd’s chanting alone does not establish whether all attendees supported Sifuna or shared the same political views. The reasons behind the protest and the demands made by participants would require further clarification.
For Wetang’ula, who has maintained a significant political presence in Bungoma for years, the disruption presented an unexpected challenge during a public engagement in his home county.
The incident also raises questions about crowd management at political and empowerment events, particularly when disagreements emerge over the distribution of assistance.
As videos of the gathering circulate online, the Matulo incident is likely to attract further discussion about political mobilisation in Bungoma and the reception of leaders during public functions.
